18 Month Check-up

Happy New Year Blog fans! We were busy busy this holiday season with family and friends. I'll post some choice pics soon.
Keagan had his 18 month check up yesterday. He was happy to play with the toys in the waiting room, but as soon as we went into the exam room he started screaming. The nurse had a heck of a time measuring his head circumference and he wouldn't stay still on the scale so his weight is really a guess. The doctor sat as far away from us as possible during the chat time of the visit- asking what he's up to and how he's doing. Keagan huddled on my chest, desperately grasping as his Humpty Dumpty and taking short, recovery sob breaths- it was so sad. After she checked all the vitals, the doctor said "I just want to see him walk briefly." She picked him up and put him across the room from me, so he could come running back to me. Well, he was screaming so hard at the ejection from my arms that his eyes were squeezed shut and he just stood there... luckily a little "I'm right here, Keagan, come here" and he opened his eyes enough to find me. By the time it came around to shots he barely had any fight left in him and the nurse told me how to hold him and said "I'm just going to do this as quick as possible" as she practically tossed the first needle across the room when she was done with it and grabbed the next. I don't think it was the most gently given shot ever- but he was going to scream whether or not she even touched him with a needle, so speed was a wiser course. He is perfectly healthy though. He is 27lbs and 32 inches long. He's still 50th percentile for height and 75th for weight. I forget what his head measured, but that was 75th as well.
I am glad we don't have to go back until 24 months.

It gets easier when you can bribe them when they are a bit older. There is a toy store on the same block as our doctor and now with Isabelle we tell her "if she is brave" she can pick out a small toy. She got her flu shot and didn't even flinch! She is so brave for a toy!

Did they try the trick when they have you stand on the scale and hold him then have only you on the scale and subtract? we used to do that when we have a particularly squirmy tot. Also next time if he is freaked as the nurse to measure your head first, then have him measure your head (those paper tape measures are cheap so they can give him one to play with) then he might let you do it to him. Just and idea.

As for the shots... well yeah, they are going to cry so getting it done as quickly as possible on a squirmy toddler is your best hope.

glad he is healthy and well.
