Erik and I joined the ranks of those who have gone to the ER in the middle of the night with a kid who has Croup last night. Yippee! What a scare. Keagan was totally fine yesterday (as a matter of fact, playing with his cousins all day- sorry guys!), and then at 11:15 woke us up gasping for air. Luckily, I had heard enough stories of Croup that I was pretty sure that was what we were dealing with, so we didn't panic. I watched for his lips to turn blue while we got dressed- that's what would have made me call 911 instead of driving ourselves- but he got better with some fresh air and just calming down. He was just as scared as we were when we first went in there, poor thing, he was all rigid and just trying anything to breathe.
Thankfully, our local ER (Emerson Hospital) was great. They saw us right away, the nurse was great with really good bedside manner. Poor Keagan was screaming most of the time, but they did the best they could and I was holding him the whole time. I actually got him to go to sleep in my arms between seeing the nurse and the doctor and the doctor didn't even wake him up! Just snuck around to his back and listened to his breathing between my arms. They explained everything really well and we were in and out in an hour and 10 minutes. Keagan got a steroid and Tylenol concoction that Keagan took very easily and a few minutes of a saline nebulizer.
The boys slept through the rest of the night. I woke up a couple times hearing Keagan labor to breathe a bit, but he didn't have the troubling cough with it and didn't wake himself up (or Daddy). We might be in for a long couple of nights, but I think all in all, we made out ok. I'll keep you posted!
