Bugs, bugs, bugs! (and not fun ones)

Uck... warm weather in New England means bugs. Some are fun, like woolly caterpillars, and some are just NOT. Sadly, we've had more than our fair share of the NOT fun kind the past week or so. First Keagan got what I can only assume is a spider bite on his stomach, which had a nice little bite mark in the center of a HUGE two-toned red welt. It was mighty pretty or a few days, let me tell you. He seems to have bad reactions to insect bites (remember when his eye swelled shut from what we think was a bite?) Luckily, with a steady diet of anti-biotic ointment and hydrocortisone, that is finally clearing.
We have also been battling a nasty outbreak of black flies that bite around your head, which you don't feel, but then notice a patch of dried blood a few minutes later. I have one on my cheek that just left a red bump, but Keagan reacts terribly to them and has two in his scalp right now that are all crusty and disgusting. Again, I've been cleaning them and putting a regimen of anti-bacterial ointment and hydrocortisone.
Then this morning, a tick on his head. Luckily, it had just bitten him, not engorged at all and was fully removed without much of a bite mark (if you don't own the Ticked Off http://www.tickedoff.com/, I highly recommend purchasing!), but of course we got the anti-biotic ointment on that too. This weekend, the tick killing pesticide is going out on our lawn because Erik also had one on him this week, and that is enough for me! Willow seems to be tick-free with his Advantix on, thankfully.
The only slightly good news in the bug world is that Maynard sprayed for mosquitoes this year in the wetlands area, and so far, that population seems to have been kept at bay. But I'm telling you- I'd take a regular old mosquito at this point to black flies and ticks!

I feel your pain! Why can't there only be nice bigs? If you call your town, they will come and spray your neighborhood again. I never knew towns did this on request, but they do. Friends of ours in Kingston call whenever they have an outdoor party. Another thing that works pretty well is a fogger. You can buy the whole system at Home Depot and stores of that such. It's not too much $$ and you can use the fogging device over and over, just buy the "deadly mixture" every year. This keeps mosquitoes, gnats, etc at bay.

I am going to get that tick off as well. Charlotte only had one so far, and like you, it wasn't in long. I still look at that spot on her back daily, and it's been 9 months!! Good luck!
