Pizza with Neighbors

On Friday afternoon our neighbor to our left came to the door and invited us over for pizza with some of the other neighbors. I was very excited because I had always wished when we first moved in that we had invited all the neighbors over to get to know them, but then it got to that point where it was over a year after we moved in and it just seemed weird, "Hey, we've been here for two years and now want to say "hi" to you." It's not that we don't know any of our neighbors, but we've never had more than the conversations neighbors share on the lawn together.
I decided to make peanut butter cookies to bring over and at 6:00pm the three of us headed next door. The neighbor's house is one of the ones that has had a second floor added onto it, and also a large family room in the back, but it was funny how much you could tell the original living room and kitchen were the exact same layout as ours. Keagan was nervous at first and wanted to be held for a few minutes, but was soon enticed by cheese, crackers and milk. The neighbor's across the street have a six year old daughter, who was the closest child in age to Keagan, with the rest being teenagers (and above!). I wasn't sure how we were going to entertain Keagan, other than munching crackers, and then we learned that the neighbor's 13 year old daughter knew how to make balloon animals! Well, that pretty much got us through to bedtime and Keagan walked home with Erik and a balloon dog on a leash, which Erik told me Keagan stopped at one point and said "Go pee-pee" to. I stayed for more chatting about the neighborhood and Maynard until 11:00pm. It was great to learn some things from neighbors who have lived here since the 80s and have sons who are grown up and out of the house (although apparently, some are also returning home...). I think we even have a volunteer to take down our dead pear tree- it's good to befriend the neighbors with power tools!
